Starting trauma therapy can feel intimidating, especially if you have heard about EMDR and worry that you will be asked to immediately relive painful memories. At WellKind Mental Health in Sarasota, EMDR therapy is paced with care, consent, and preparation. You do not have to rush into anything before you feel ready.
EMDR stands for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing, and it is an evidence-based therapy often used to help people process trauma, anxiety, panic, grief, and distressing life experiences. But one of the most important things to know is this: trauma reprocessing does not begin right away.
EMDR has eight phases, and the actual trauma reprocessing does not begin until Phase 4. Your first session is not about forcing you into the hardest memory or asking you to “go there” before you feel safe. Instead, the beginning of EMDR is focused on understanding your story, identifying what feels overwhelming, building trust, and helping your nervous system feel more supported.
In Phases 1–3, we spend time getting to know you, exploring your history at a pace that feels manageable, and preparing you with grounding tools and resources. This may include learning ways to calm your body, creating a safe or calm place, practicing containment skills, and helping you feel more in control of the process.
Some people move through these preparation phases quickly. Others need more time, and that is completely okay. At WellKind Mental Health, we can take as long as you need in Phases 1–3 before beginning any trauma reprocessing. EMDR should not feel like being thrown into the deep end. It should feel like having a trained therapist walk with you, slowly and carefully, while making sure you have the tools you need along the way.
Your first EMDR session may include talking about what brought you to therapy, what symptoms you are experiencing, what goals you have, and what you hope will feel different in your life. You may also talk about past therapy experiences, current stressors, and what helps you feel grounded. You are allowed to ask questions, slow down, pause, or name what feels uncomfortable.
Many clients come to EMDR therapy because they feel stuck. They may logically know they are safe now, but their body still reacts as if the past is happening again. EMDR can help the brain and body process distressing memories so they feel less intense, less activating, and less present in daily life.
If you are looking for EMDR therapy in Sarasota, trauma therapy in Sarasota, or virtual EMDR therapy in Florida, WellKind Mental Health offers a gentle and collaborative approach. You do not have to be “ready” to talk about everything in your first session. You only have to be willing to start where you are.
Healing does not have to be rushed. EMDR therapy can move at the pace your nervous system needs.
