Getting to Know the Eight Phases of EMDR

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a structured therapy that helps the brain process and heal from distressing memories. A typical EMDR journey follows eight phases:

History – Your therapist learns about your background and goals.

Preparation – You’ll build coping skills and understand the process.

Assessment – The target memory is identified, along with its image, negative belief, and body sensations.

Reprocessing – Using bilateral stimulation (eye movements, tapping, or sounds), you process the memory.

Installation - Pairing a new, more adaptive cognition with the original target.

Body Scan – You notice any lingering tension or discomfort in your body. This helps ensure the memory no longer triggers physical stress.

Closure – You end the session feeling grounded, even if processing isn’t complete.

Reevaluation – In the next session, your therapist checks progress and plans next steps.

Through these phases, EMDR helps shift painful memories from overwhelming to manageable, allowing you to move forward with greater peace.
