is EMDR a somatic therapy

EMDR therapy is often described as a trauma therapy, but many people are surprised to learn that it can also be a deeply somatic therapy, meaning it pays attention to the body’s role in healing.

When distressing experiences happen, they are not always stored only as thoughts or memories. Trauma can also live in the body through sensations, tension, nervous system activation, panic, shutdown, nausea, tightness in the chest, or the feeling of being “stuck” even when you know you are safe now.

EMDR, or Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing, helps the brain and body process distressing memories that may still feel unresolved. During EMDR, a therapist may ask you to notice the image, belief, emotion, and body sensation connected to a memory. Body sensations are one aspect of memory. This is why EMDR can feel different from traditional talk therapy; it addresses all aspects of the traumatic memory. Because of this, you do not have to explain every detail of what happened. Instead, EMDR allows your nervous system to gently process what has been held internally.

Because trauma often impacts the body’s sense of safety, EMDR therapy can help clients notice where distress shows up physically and support the body in moving toward relief, calm, and integration. As the memory becomes less emotionally charged, many clients also notice shifts in their body, such as feeling lighter, calmer, more grounded, or less tense.

At WellKind Mental Health, EMDR therapy is offered in a gentle, relational, and client-paced way. We believe healing should never feel forced or rushed. Whether you are working through childhood experiences, anxiety, grief, relational wounds, or trauma, EMDR can help your mind and body reconnect with a deeper sense of safety.
